That's What Chey Said: Hoarding Books

We all love books...that's why you're here, right?  After posting pictures of my bookshelves, I received a few comments about how many books I own.  The truth is, I'm kind of a book hoarder.  It's not so bad yet, but so far I've managed to acquire nearly 70 physical books this year...and it's only the beginning of March.  Let's do some math here.  I get about 6 books in a week on average.  There are 52 weeks in a year, so if I were to keep getting as many books as I do, I will end up with over 300 new books.

So even though I'm quickly running out of room to keep all of the books I love/want to read eventually, I do keep certain duplicates of books that I already own.  What?  Don't look at me like that...I have good reasons.  Here, let me show you.

Sometimes I have the finished copy, but I like the ARC covers better...

Sometimes I just like to keep favorites, especially if they differ, even in the slightest way, and sometimes I own the audiobook but fear that I may enjoy the reading experience more.

Okay, so these are the only duplicates that I actually keep.  The others I give away/donate.  I know that I have a lot, but it's not nearly as much as if I were to keep all the books I've ever owned.  I've even done quite a bit of almost-spring cleaning lately and piled up nearly 50 books for my blogoversary/21st birthday celebration!

Wondering how many books I actually own?  Over 500.  I had about 100 before I began blogging and I've acquired the rest over the last two years.

That's my bedroom in a matter of just a few months.  Lol!

Do you hoard books or do give them away when you're done?

  3. I try really hard not to hoard books! I try to pass ARCs on to other bloggers and may need to take some to Goodwill (since shipping is so expensive here in Canada for giveaways).

    1. I'm the same as you. I want to give them away, but the shipping is so expensive that it's hard. So I have a huge stack that are ready to go, I just don't know where to take them.

  4. I'm kind of a book hoarder too. I've actually been meaning to get rid of books I know I'm not going to read, but since I'm up at school I haven't really had the chance. But I really like keeping my ARC's as well as any finished copies of them, mostly because I don't get a lot of ARC's, and sometimes they're signed. Luckily, I don't have a lot of duplicates, and honestly, audio books don't count as duplicates to me. A lot of book bloggers are book hoarders, they just might not want to admit it. You're not alone!

  5. I'm a huge book hoarder. I've been it for a while now and I don't mind it at all. I love the look of my filled shelves :D I'm starting to look like the girl, because I'm already stacking books on top of my closet, haha. I don't get ARC's, but I have no idea where I would put them. I definitely need to get more space soon.

  6. I'm a pretty big book hoarder myself! I've got two bookcases full of books and then some stacks. I don't know if it's 500, but it's a lot. I try to get rid of some every couple of months though. That means I take them into my used bookstore and try not to walk out with the same amount. I went this weekend and took 8 and came back with 2, so I felt good about that.

P.S. I LOVE that Supernatural gif!

  7. Ha, love the pic of Jensen & Jared! =P

I can totally relate to your post because I am definitely a book hoarder! There are books and even entire series that I don't want anymore but I still haven't cleansed my shelves of them yet...I have no idea what I'm waiting for. o_0

  8. Wow! You have a lot of books. I tend to give them away because I have so many books to read that I rarely have time to read them again. And I live with two hoarders. We don't need a third one.

  10. I give away a lot of my books that aren't at the top of my favorites list to the local library... only because I'm not a re-reader... but I'll keep them if I love the covers!

  11. And now I'm jealous :) So many books~
I think I own about 150 physical books, and lots and lots of ebooks..., but at least with ebooks I don't have to worry about where to keep them

  12. Hoard'em. I have about 200, but I just started blogging, so I'm not exactly the give-away type of person yet, mostly because I don't get ARCs or books for review yet (which I'm cool with because I wouldn't have to time to read them anyway). I also really love rereading, so I know I'll get a use out of them again. But I'm seriously in awe of your 70 books acquired this year already. That's INSANE!

  13. I wish I could keep all the books I buy, I just don't have enough room for them! So I try to keep all my favorites and get rid of ones that I didn't like as much; I usually donate, or sell them to get new and interesting ones. Awesome post, really interesting!

  14. I am definitely a book hoarder. I have my 2 shelves full with 2 rows on each shelf, and both stacked on top nearly to the ceiling as well.

But, the thing is, no matter how many books us bookaholics have, we always want more. So, when we go to places like thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales, or library sales....places where we know we can get alot more books at reasonable prices, we always seem to buy alot more. Then, seem to be running out of places to store them when we get home....LOL.

  15. ooh so when it comes to doubles? I tend to give away the ARCs. Sometimes we even end up with double of ARCs and we mostly just hold a giveaway on the blog (like our giveaway of prodigy by marie lu). However sometimes when it is a book we love and have doubles, because I share the books with my sister, we tend to assign each one a copy.

We have around 300 books including YA, Manga, and Chick Lits. Since the beginning of the year I think we got around 30 to 40 new books? but we are TWO people so that's ok :P but man 70 for one person? If only a day is 48 hours :P

    awesome post!
