How do you keep your journals?

Journals have so many incredible uses.  Some use them to express their art, some make lists in them, and most popular- to write thoughts.

I recently received a gorgeous leather bound journal and although I've always wanted one, a part of me is a little afraid to start using it because I'm not sure what I want to use it for.  I've done the whole journal-writing thing, especially in high school.  Looking back on them now, they're just embarrassing.

I also don't know if I want to draw/paint in it because I'm very prone to screwing up and I definitely don't want to ruin it.

I just wanted to ask, do you keep a journal?

Do you write thoughts, dreams, quotes, and lists in it?
or are you more on the artsy side and keep one for that?

What else should I consider using my journal for?
Finally, have you ever been afraid to use your journals, notebooks, or sketchbooks?

  1. I have a journal that I keep to chronicle the things that happen to me and my feelings surrounding them at the time. I talk about dreams and mention quotes once in awhile, sometimes songs of the day. I use an ordinary spiral notebook, one I'm not afraid to mess up in. I have a bunch of nicer journals and never seem to use them because I don't want to waste them and want something perfect to use them for. So I know what you mean there! :)

  2. Definitely can relate. I keep looking at the fancy journals in book stores but always feel like I don't have anything important enough to say to want to keep them forever, or for any length of time for that matter. And cheap notebooks are disposable enough to gripe in them and then tear the frustrated entries out and trash them. I have considered keeping a journal and writing down at least one "good" thing, either something that happened or just something that made me smile, or something I'm grateful for but haven't actually done it. Let us know what you decide!
