My Thoughts:
I wanted to love this book as soon as I picked it up, and I did. There's something about Lauren Oliver's writing style that draws me in-- very detailed and charming. The story surfaces as another normal day for this popular senior girl in high school. Something happens to her that she can't explain but every morning, she's forced to try and find out and prevent it from happening again, attempting to make everything right in the process.
In a way, it reminds me of that episode of Supernatural where Dean dies and each time he does, Sam wakes up in his bed and it's the same day, so he's forced to try and prevent if from happening again. Except that episode made me laugh a lot more than this story did. In fact, this book left me aching. I definitely wanted to cry when I was done but I held back. Aren't you proud of me? Anyways, yes, it's depressing but this book has such a great meaning behind it. I learned that we don't really know how we truly treat people until we're forced to live it over and over. Everyone is mean to someone, especially when it comes down to being peer pressured into it, no matter what your age is. It's sad, really. That's why I'm go grateful when I run into someone that treats others well. I always try to, but there are just those moody days.
My favorite character was Kent. I'm such a sucker for good boys! I caught myself smiling and my heart thumping faster a few times over him. Sam's best friend, Lindsay, was probably my least favorite. She's the one that initiated every horrible thing they did and they always did it as a group- Sam and her three best friends. In a way, Lindsay reminded me of Regina from Mean Girls. Another thing I learned was that I would like to name my future daughter Elody (or Elodie...I like that spelling a little more).
Overall, this plot was something I really enjoyed. It was all very thought out and the description of everything, even death, was breathtaking. I felt very satisfied when I closed the book, which means a lot. I don't always feel that way, so I had to give Before I Fall 5 out of 5 stars. I'm definitely looking forward to reading Delirium as well. Please make an effort to read this book in your lifetime. You never know when it'll all end, right? So make the most of life and read this incredible story.
